Welcome to parenthood. May I recommend a TiVo. As a father of four (very soon to be five) I find it indispensable. For us so we can time shift the shows for our enjoyment later - which allows us to give the kids complete attention. For the kids because we can TiVo 6-8 or so shows of their favorites (Backyardigans, Fresh Beat Band, etc.) and the lineup keeps changing so they don't get tired of watching the same ones until they're dead beyond measure.

PS I would recommend never watching shows like fringe or Heroes with the kids. Even the atmosphere those shows create impacts little minds and bodies.
